How to Create a Chic DIY Tote Bag from Scratch: Step-by-Step Guide
Assembling the Tote Bag
We will focus on sewing the sides and bottom seam, creating a flat bottom, and attaching handles and straps. Each step is crucial for ensuring a durable and chic tote bag.
Sewing the Sides and Bottom Seam
To start, place the exterior fabric pieces with the right sides facing each other. Using a sewing machine, sew the side seams with a ½ inch seam allowance. Ensure that your stitches are even and consistent to maintain a polished look.
Next, sew the bottom seam with the same seam allowance. Use reinforced stitches at the beginning and end to strengthen the seam. If using a lightweight fabric, consider adding interfacing along the seams for added durability. Turn the fabric right side out and give it a good press with an iron to flatten the seams.
Creating a Flat Bottom
Creating a flat bottom will give more space inside the bag. With the tote bag still inside out, pinch each bottom corner to form a triangle. Ensure the side seam aligns with the bottom seam.
Measure about 2 inches from the tip of the triangle down and mark a line perpendicular to the seam. Sew along the marked line and cut off the excess fabric, leaving a ½ inch seam allowance. Repeat this process for the other corner. Turn the bag right side out and press the bottom to define the flat base.
Attaching Handles and Straps
For a sturdy handle, we recommend using webbing. Cut two pieces of webbing to your desired length, typically about 24 inches for hand-held straps or 40 inches for shoulder straps. Place the ends of the straps on the exterior of the bag, with each end positioned about 3 inches from the side seams.
Pin the handles in place and sew a square with an “X” through it at each attachment point to ensure they are secure. If you prefer fabric straps, cut two strips of fabric, sew them into tubes, and turn them right side out before attaching. This will ensure the straps are both stylish and durable.
Our tote bag is now taking shape with sturdy seams, a flat bottom, and secure handles.
Adding Pockets and Compartments
Adding pockets and compartments to a tote bag enhances its functionality and organization. We’ll cover how to strategically place external pockets and incorporate useful internal pockets and dividers.
External Pocket Placement
First, decide where to place external pockets. The front and back panels of the tote are ideal spots. We should cut our pocket fabric pieces slightly smaller than the desired pocket size.
For instance, we can cut two pieces of fabric for a front pocket that measure about 10×8 inches. Hem the top edge by folding it down 1/4 inch, and then again 1/2 inch, for a smooth finish. Sew along the folded edge.
Position the sewn pocket on the tote panel and pin it in place. Ensure it’s centered or as per our desired layout. Stitch around the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. For added durability, reinforce each corner with a diagonal stitch.
Internal Pockets and Dividers
For internal pockets, decide on their number and size based on what items we plan to store. To add a simple internal pocket, cut fabric to about 9×7 inches. Hem all four edges by folding them down 1/4 inch twice and sewing them flat.
Position the pocket on the inner lining of the tote. Pin it in place and sew around the sides and bottom, again leaving the top open. We may add a divider by sewing a vertical line down the center, creating two smaller pockets.
If we want to add zippered compartments, we’ll need to measure and cut a suitable length of zipper and fabric. Attach the zipper to the pocket fabric, then sew the assembled pocket to the inner lining. Ensure the zipper pulls are accessible and functional, enhancing the tote’s utility.
By carefully planning and executing these steps, our tote bag will not only look stylish but also be highly functional.
